What we know about you, and why.
SALYX is a marketplace, so some of what you give us is meant to be published and some of it is not. This explains which is which, who else sees it, and what you can ask us to do about it.01Who we are
SALYX is a marketplace where Hairstylists and Barbers publish their work, and salons advertise roles, chair spaces and project work. This notice explains what we do with information about you.
SALYX is the data controller for everything described here. If you are a salon reviewing applicants, you are a controller of that applicant’s information in your own right — what you do with it after we introduce you is your responsibility, not ours.
02Your account
To create an account we need your name and email address. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and profile picture from Google — not your password.
We keep your account for as long as you want it. When you close it we delete your profile, your portfolio and your messages. We keep a record that the account existed, and anything we are required to retain for tax or to defend a legal claim.
03What you publish about your work
If you create a Hairstylist profile, the things you add to it are meant to be seen. Your name, the area you work in, your skills, your experience, your qualifications and the photographs and video in your portfolio appear on a public page once we have approved it. Search engines may index that page.
Please only upload images of clients where you have their permission. If someone else appears in your portfolio and wants it removed, they can contact us and we will remove it.
Some details stay private and are shown only to salons you have applied to or messaged: your email address, your phone number, and the notes you send with an application.
04Messages between you and other people
SALYX carries messages between stylists and salons. We store them so the conversation is there when you come back. We do not use the contents of your messages for advertising, and we never include message content in the notification emails we send — those only tell you that a message is waiting.
Our administrators can read message content, but only to investigate a report of abuse, fraud or a breach of our terms. We keep messages for as long as your account is open, and delete them when you close it.
05Applying for work
When you apply for an opportunity, the salon that posted it sees your profile, the note you wrote and the date you applied. They can mark your application as under review, shortlisted or not proceeding, and you can see that status in your account.
You can withdraw an application at any time. The salon keeps its own record of applications it has received, which is theirs rather than ours.
06Confirming your work history
If you ask us to verify a job on your profile, we send the salon you have named the details of what you have claimed — the role, the dates and the location — so they can confirm or dispute it. That salon sees the claim as you wrote it.
Only ask for verification from a salon you are content to be contacted on your behalf. You can withdraw a request before it is answered. The outcome is shown on your profile as verified or unverified; we do not publish anything the salon says in reply.
07Where you are
We convert the address you give us into map coordinates so your salon or profile can be found by people searching nearby. To do that we send the address text to OpenStreetMap’s lookup service. The coordinates are shown publicly as a pin on a map.
When any page shows a map, your browser requests the map images from OpenStreetMap directly, which means your IP address reaches them. If you would rather not appear at a precise point on a map, give a town or postcode rather than a street address.
08Measuring how people find SALYX
We use PostHog, hosted in the EU, to understand how people arrive at SALYX and which parts they use. We record pages viewed and actions taken, along with the campaign that brought you here. We do not send PostHog your name, your email address, or anything you have typed.
We ask before we store anything on your device. If you agree, we set one cookie so we can tell that a returning visitor is the same browser rather than a new one. If you decline, we still count the visit but keep nothing on your device, and you will not be recognised next time.
09Payments
Payments are handled by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe directly and are never received or stored by SALYX. We keep a record of what you have bought and when, so we know what your salon is entitled to publish.
10Who else receives your information
We use these companies to run SALYX. They act on our instructions and may not use your information for their own purposes.
| Company | What they do, and where |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Stores accounts, profiles, messages, applications and uploaded media. Hosted in Ireland. |
| Netlify | Hosts the site and keeps server logs, including IP addresses. |
| Resend | Sends our emails. Based in the United States, under standard contractual clauses. |
| PostHog | Usage analytics, on their EU hosting. |
| Stripe | Takes payments directly from you. |
| Signs you in, if you choose to use Google. | |
| OpenStreetMap | Turns addresses into map coordinates and serves the map images. |
11Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, object to how we are using it, or ask us to restrict what we do with it. You can also ask for your information in a portable form.
Most of it you can do yourself: your profile is editable, your messages are visible, and closing your account removes both. For anything else, email us and we will respond within one month.
If you think we have got this wrong, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk. We would rather you told us first, so we can put it right.
